The Boeing MH-47G “Chinook” is a heavy lift assault helicopter operated by the U.S. Army’s 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment for long-range insertion and extraction of special forces, equipment, and supplies during nighttime, low-level flight missions deep in enemy and denied territories.
The 6-blade, twin engine, heavy lift aircraft is 98 feet in length including rotor blades and 13 feet wide. Two Lycoming T55-4-714 Turboshaft engines power the aircraft to speeds greater than 196 mph with a range of 460 miles. An extendable fuel probe allows air-to-air refueling from dedicated tankers for increased range. The cockpit is configured with a fully integrated digital Common Avionics Architecture System (CAAS) enabling global communications and navigation. CAAS includes a comprehensive defensive aids suite employing forward-looking infrared (FLIR) and multimode terrain following radar for nap-of-the-earth and low-level flight operations in extremely poor visibility and adverse weather. The standard crew of five consists of a pilot, co-pilot, and three crew chiefs/gunners armed with two M134 7.62mm miniguns and two M240D 7.62mm machine guns.
