12 Air Maintenance Squadron (AMS) is based at Canadian Forces Base Shearwater located 4.5 nautical miles southeast of Shearwater, Nova Scotia, on the eastern shore of Halifax Harbour. Its mission is to maximize aircraft availability through first and second-line maintenance support to the CH148 Cyclone fleet both ashore and deployed on HMC ships. The squadron’s expertise enables it to provide excellent products and services to the Wing. Aircraft maintenance activities include on-aircraft servicing, armament repair, avionics, aviation life support equipment and components, and provide logistics support to the Wing. The organization is comprised of approximately 320 professionals and plays a key role in providing combat-ready Wings for the Fleet.

The Cyclone is a twin-engine, multi-role shipboard helicopter developed by the Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation for the Canadian Armed Forces. Its mission is to conduct anti-submarine warfare (ASW), surveillance, and search and rescue from Royal Canadian Navy warships and provides tactical transport for operations supporting national and international security efforts. The aircraft has a metal and composite airframe and a four-bladed articulated composite main rotor blade that tapers back and angles downward at the tips to reduce noise and increase lift. It is powered by two General Electric CT7-8A7 turboshaft engines each generating 3,000 shp for a top speed of 190 mph and a range of 740 km. It is equipped with devices to search and locate submarines during ASW and countermeasures for protection against missile strikes The standard crew is 2 pilots, 1 tactical coordinator, and 1 sensor operator. Capacity is increased to 6 in mission configuration and up to 22 in utility configuration.
