Operated by PJ Helicopters of Red Bluff, California, this Bell 214B “Big Lifter” is the most powerful single-pilot, single-engine helicopter manufactured in the world today. The T5508D turboshaft engine and notably massive main rotor contribute to a cruise speed of 130 knots and a service ceiling of 16,500 feet. With an external hook load of 8000 pounds and internal gross weight of 13,800 pounds, N217PJ is used primarily for precision lifts for gas and electric utility companies including pole settings, lifting wire, setting cage tops, and dismantling old power line structures. It is also called upon by California’s state and federal firefighting agencies to assist in the suppression of wildfires by transporting fire crews, equipment and cargo, and performing bucket work with a Bambi Bucket delivering 420 gallons of water for initial attack to a maximum capacity of 680 gallons
